The Giant's Causeway on the north coast of Co. Antrim is made up of around 40,000 interlocking basalt columns formed by volcanic activity some 60 million years ago. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and is cared for by the National Trust. Day tours from Belfast and Dublin often add the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge and Dunluce Castle.
